In 1973 Boyle was moved to a Special Unit set up in an attempt to rehabilitate the most dangerous criminals in the Scottish system. Here he wrote his autobiography A Sense of Freedom which became a bestseller and a film. It was republished in 2017 with a foreword by Irvine Welsh. An important book that led to better understanding of prison life and reform of the prison system. It is also a cracking good read about the underbelly of Glasgow and criminal life in the 1960s (the times of the Kray Brothers, whom Boyle briefly hung out with while trying to escape the Scottish police).
