A very good copy. *** The One Day of the Week (El Jarama) was the first full length novel by Spanjsh writer Rafael Sanchez Ferlosio (1927-2019), and his first book to be translated into English. It’s a experimental and realist novel, set on a Sunday at a riverside town near Madrid. After the success of this book, the author renounced writing for twenty years. (He didn’t return to fiction until 1986.) He never gave the reason for his silence, but many critics assumed it was a form of silent opposition to the Francoist State.
