Portnoy’s Complaint (1969) turned Philip Roth from a promising young writer into a literary superstar and celebrity. Gone were the literary constraints from his previous work and the influence of Henry James: this book was written to make us roar with laughter and disturb us in equal measure, as we follow the exploits of a sex-crazed, mother-adoring young man growing up in a Jewish household. Our copy (a first UK edition) has a signed typed excerpt from the novel (the first two pages typed on a A4 sheet) affixed to the front past-down. A one-off copy of this quintessential novel.
