Published in the same year as Portnoy’s Complaint, in 1969, Slaughterhouse-Five is another comic (but much darker) masterpiece. Kurt Vonnegut’s genre-defying, time-hopping and utterly unique novel was based on his distressing experience as a pilot at the bombing of Dresden. The writer was traumatised by the event and it took him years and years and many re-writes to find the right literary form for his experiences. Originally a somewhat obscure but admired sci-fi writer, this novel made his name and fortune. The first printing sold out immediately and several impressions followed soon after. Our copy is a sixth printing from June 1969 with a superb first state dust jacket.
