This English language translation appeared in the US in 1989 and in the UK a year later, both in a translation by Alfred Birnbaum. The novel followed Hear the Wind Sing (1979) and Pinball, 1973 (1980). English translations of these first two books (resp. 1987 and 1985) were published in Japan only by Kodansha under their Kodansha English Library branding, for English Foreign Language learners.
