City of Night
£50.00
First UK edition. Publisher’s original red speckled boards with bright white lettering to spine. Contemporary gift inscription to front free endpaper. Otherwise about fine: a clean and unmarked copy. In complete but rather worn dust jacket: creased and with chips and tears to spine ends and fold corners. With tape repair to reverse. (Please see photographs.) *** John Rechy (born March 10, 1931) is among the pioneers of modern LGBT literature. City of Night follows a young man as he travels across the country while working as a hustler. It inspired film maker Gus van Sant to write the screenplay for My Own Private Idaho and Jim Morrison apparently references the book in the The Doors song L.A. Woman. The UK printing is notoriously scarce.
