Closed tear halfway down the spine. *** Arthur Gregor (b.1923) is often compared to the Austrian poet Rilke. He has the same inward-looking intensity. He is quietly romantic and his poetry is a far cry from the poetry of the period. With the Beats he shares a sense of spirituality, but he whispers rather than shouts. His language is clear, almost plain, his poetry is mournful and easy to understand. Gregor deserves to be much better known than he is.
