Hardcover

4to. Publisher’s grey boards with gilt stamped lettering to front. In photo illustrated dust jacket. First thus. Originally published in 1969 in a limited edition of 1000 copies. With original introductions by Luciano Mondini and Gian Butturini and a new introduction by Martin Parr. Unpaginated [c.104 pages]. Fine. *** Gian Butturini was a graphic designer from Italy who took these photographs when he lived in London in the late 1960s. “This diary of images — my London — arose from an inner impulse”, he writes in his short introduction. The book has become controversial because of the juxtaposition of two photographs: a two-page spread shows a Black woman selling tickets on the underground next to a gorilla in a cage at the London Zoo. The sequencing seemed to have been deliberate: the photographer writes about “a few controversial pairings” in his introduction. Martin Parr came under fire for his role in the republication of the book. He resigned as the artistic director of the Bristol Photo Festival following a student-led protest alleging racial insensitivity. The book was withdrawn from distribution with all of the publisher’s remaining copies apparently destroyed.
