Hymns to St. Geryon and Other Poems was originally published in 1959; Dark Brown in 1961. *** Michael McClure (October 20, 1932 – May 4, 2020) was a key member of the Beat Generation. He was one of the five poets (including Allen Ginsberg) who read at the famous San Francisco Six Gallery reading in 1955, fictionalized in Jack Kerouac’s The Dharma Bums. Kerouac also wrote about him in his novel Big Sur where he is immortalized as Pat McLear. *** These two early poetry publications show McClure at his best and most spirited. It includes Peyote Poem, possibly the best poetic account of drugs use ever published.
