Afterword by Simon Baker. *** A series of surrealist self-portraits taken by Ukrainian photographer Boris Mikhailov (born 1938) in the early1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Performing nude for the camera, with a dagger and a dildo for props, the artist apparently challenges the strong and masculine stereotype connected with the Soviet regime and the contradiction between authorship and identity.
