Sq. 4to (31x31cm). Pictorial paper covered boards with white lettering to black cloth spine. In white lettered transparent plastic dust jacket. Includes the ‘to the reader’ pamphlet. Book is in near fine condition with just the slightest foxing to top-edge and corners a little scuffed. Dust jacket is rubbed and slightly chipped with minor loss to head of spine and lower fold. *** A stunning monograph on the Dutch artist Karel Appel (1921-2006), printed on different types of paper. 22 tipped-in colour plates on thick black paper, several drawings on thick blue and red paper and a number of glassine sheets with fragments of text. With photographs by Ed van der Elsken. Illustrated throughout. *** Text (in English) by Hugo Claus (1929 -2008), who is one of Belgium’s best-known writers. His writing is insightful and poetic.
