Lunuganga
£250.00
First edition. Large 4to [32x28cm]. Hardback in dust jacket. Foxing to cloth and reverse of dust jacket; a little musty smelling. Otherwise a fine copy. Full-page duotone photographs by Christoph Bon and Dominique Sansoni taken over many years of Geoffrey Bawa’s architectural garden project in Sri Lanka, Lunuganga. With drawings and plans and a short introduction by Geoffrey Bawa. Exceptionally scarce. *** When on his return from Europe after the Second World War, the 29 year Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003) bought an abandoned rubber estate on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, he had a clear vision of what the estate could become. Lacking technical knowledge, he decided to study architecture, first as an apprentice with with local architect H.H. Reid, then studying for many years in England. He became one of the most influential Asian architects of his generation. His whole life Bawa kept working on his Lunaganga project. This scarce book shows the development of the estate and gardens in photographs taken over many years by Christoph Bon and Dominique Sansoni.
