Mishima, Yukio

£35.00

1st Edition

Black cloth boards with white lettering to spine. Slight browning/off-setting to endpapers. In near fine unclipped dustjacket, with some foxing to panels and minor scuffing to folds. Illustrated throughout the text with photographs by Koichi Yamada. Translated from the Japanese by Donald Keene. First British Common Wealth Edition. *** Madame de Sade is a play based on the life of Renée de Sade, the wife of the notorious Marquis de Sade. In the author’s postface Mishima writes that the play might be described as “Sade seen through women’s eyes”. All characters in the play are female. The play was revived in March 2009 London’s Donmar Warehouse starring Rosamund Pike (in the title role) and Judi Dench, amongst others. *** The publication is Volume 1 in the International Play Series, a series that never seems to have taken off. It appears that only two books were ever published in this series.
