Erich Maria Remarque (22 June 1898 – 25 September 1970) is best known for his WW1 novel All Quiet ot the Western Front. In The Black Obelisk he writes about Germany in the period just after the war, when the country was marked by hyperinflation and rising nationalism and Adolf Hitler began his slow rise to power.
