All are first editions. *** When Andre Gide (22 November 1869 – 19 February 1951) was asked which of his books he would choose if only one were to survive, he replied, ‘I think it would be my Journal.’ The journal was always Gide’s best mode of expression, and he wrote his journals as a writer, always with potential publication in mind. ‘When, at the age of eighteen of nineteen, Andre Gide began keeping his first journal, he already intended to be a writer,’ writes Justin O’Brien in his introduction. The journals run from 1889 to 1949, the year the first volume was published.
