In 1973 Boyle was moved to a Special Unit set up in an attempt to rehabilitate the most dangerous criminals in the Scottish system. Here he wrote his autobiography A Sense of Freedom which became a bestseller and a film. It was republished in 2017 with a foreword by Irvine Welsh. In 1984 he published his prison diaries as The Pain of Confinement, more directly relating his experience at the Special Unit, running from September 1974 to his release in 1982.
