Soft cover
First Futura publication.Translated from the Dutch by Greta Kilburn. Pictorial wrappers. Previous owner’s name to verso of front cover. Some foxing to reverse of covers and prelims as well as some spotting to edges of text block. Pages age-tanned but clean and unmarked. *** Groundbreaking novel by Dutch novelist and sculptor Jan Wolkers (1925-2007). Controversial at the time of publication (1969, as Turks fruit) for its explicit sex scenes. Wolkers would stay a bit of an outlier in Dutch literature. Raw and straight to the point, but at the same time sensitive and often baroque in style; similar perhaps to the American writer Henry Miller. The book was the basis for Paul Verhoeven’s film of the same name (1972).
