First UK Edition.Translated from the Dutch by Greta Kilburn. Publisher’s black cloth boards with silver lettering to spine. Slight dent to fore-edge of upper board. About fine. In near fine, slightly creased dust jacket designed by Christopher Cresey. Very light sunning to spine. *** Groundbreaking novel by Dutch novelist and sculptor Jan Wolkers (1925-2007). Controversial at the time of publication (1969, as Turks fruit) for its explicit sex scenes. Wolkers would stay a bit of an outlier in Dutch literature. Raw and straight to the point, but at the same time sensitive and often baroque in style; similar perhaps to the American writer Henry Miller. The book was the basis for Paul Verhoeven’s film of the same name (1972).
