Although Rolling Thunder Logbook by playwright Sam Shepard is nominally a book about Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue tour, it elevates the genre of rock journalism. The photo-illustrated diary is a literary masterpiece about small town America in the mid-1970s and a life on the road with Dylan and entourage. *** Lesser-known but equally good in its own right is Liverpool Explodes!, in which Mark Cooper charts the rise of two Liverpool bands in the late 70s and early 80s: The Teardrop Explodes and Echo & the Bunnymen. It featured in Jarvis Cocker’s list of the top 10 music books of all time, where he wrote this: “Before he became responsible for Later … and the bulk of the BBC’s music output, Mark Cooper wrote this affectionate and hilarious account of the early 1980s music scene in Liverpool and specifically the careers of the Teardrop Explodes and Echo & the Bunnymen. Unfortunately, it’s out of print at the moment.” But Quinto Bookshop has it!
